The latest edition of the UK children's literature journal Books for Keeps online is available http://booksforkeeps.co.uk/issue/187
I find it useful getting the email reminder.
Rosemary Stones' editorial mentions a couple of campaigns - Campaign for the Book organised by children's writer Alan Gibbons - see his blog as a forum for library advocacy - both school and public, http://alangibbons.net/ and for the Campaign Charter and signatories http://alangibbons.net/?page_id=206
Now the Bookseller has started a campaign to engage support for public libraries Fight 4 Libraries, and there is a Facebook site http://bit.ly/fight4libraries
Two obituaries of much loved authors - Dick King Smith and Brian Jacques, Michael Rosen on the language of the King James Bible, an interview with author Julie Hearn, a heap of reviews and much more...
Kia ora - this blog was a place to learn how to blog and to share information relevant to school libraries, literacy and learning and support the Northland school library network meetings. It has not been added to for many years. "Zest" is to aspire to a spirit of liveliness, enthusiasm and relish - and a nod to my citrus setting in the orchard town of Kerikeri where I am based.

Poetry
Today, October 7th, is UK Poetry Day which is celebrated in the latest Books for Keeps (online) newsletter with an interview with Michael Rosen.
On the right hand side of this page there is a Subscribe button to sign up for Books for Keeps newsletters and notification of the latest issue release.
By coincidence, today's The Core newsletter features "some friendly poets" - Billy Collins, Nikki Giovanni, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Mary Oliver, and Richard Wilbur.

The Core October newsletter also features graphic novels and some "best of..." lists for youth - teen fiction, romance books, sports books, and best bets for teen researchers...

Books for Keeps online and free
The wonderful UK children's literature journal Books for Keeps is now online and freely available.
Go to the website http://www.booksforkeeps.co.uk/ and click on 'View Latest Issue' which will take you to the July issue, including the digital version.
If you then scroll down that page, you will see the BfK Newsletter box where you can 'subscribe' to the free BfK email newsletter which will alert you when the magazine is available and to new material on the site.
From the website :
Books for Keeps is the UK’s leading, independent children’s book magazine. It was launched in 1980 and ever since has been reviewing hundreds of new children’s books each year and publishing articles on every aspect of writing for children. There are over 12,500 reviews on our new website and more than 2,000 articles including interviews with the top children’s authors and illustrators.
“The best scholars, reviewers, authors and critics write for Books for Keeps,” says editor Rosemary Stones, “We hold a mirror up to the children’s book world and reflects back its output, issues and preoccupations with intelligence, scholarship and wit.”

Books for Keeps and "teachers as readers" research
I've mentioned this UK research in a previous post - here is the Books for Keeps article about it... http://www.booksforkeeps.co.uk/issue/179/childrens-books/articles/other-articles/developing-teachers%E2%80%99-knowledge-of-children%E2%80%99s
It quotes the wonderful Aidan Chambers who was saying, 30 years ago, :
‘Unless a school is staffed by people who enjoy books and enjoy talking to children about what they read then it is unlikely that they will be very successful in helping children to become readers.’
Introducing books to children, 1973
