I've had fun with my young niece and nephew using Photostory to make "videos" (animated digital pictures with written captions, voice narration and music) of events, activities and visits, and mentioned before in this blog how easy it is to use...

In the introduction to Lisa Miller's book, Linda Rief says "Frank Smith admonished us years ago to let kids into the "literacy club" via real reading and writing, and now I have to join the 21st century version of the club. At the very least, I have to let my students show me (and teach me) how they use these tools to enhance their learning."

Poetry, Judith Viorst and Photostory
This post brings together several good things : Judith Viorst's poetry, Laura Candler's website, a teacher Radene Girola's great lesson plan using the poem as a "mentor text", and Photostory...
Judith Viorst - author of the much loved, often quoted Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, is also a poet sensitive to the world of children and their feelings - here is a short poem called Thank you note (from back when children wrote thank you letters!) at http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/thank-you-note/
I wanted small pierced earrings (gold).
You gave me slippers (gray).
My Mother said she would scold
Unless I wrote to say
How much I liked them.
Not much.

Laura Candler has a useful teachers' resources website with a poetry page (April is Poetry Month in the USA so there is a lot of poetry promotion going on at the moment).
She shares a teacher's lesson which uses Judith's "If I were in charge of the world" poem as a "mentor text" to inspire students to write their own version and once they have written it they produce it as a Photostory.

PhotoStory free software
PhotoStory is wonderful free software which enables you to turn a collection of digital photos into a "video" complete with your own narration, text and music background. It is lots of fun and very easy to use... It could be a great tool for the classroom with students of all ages for a variety of purposes, and in the library maybe for doing book reviews ? It could be a good resource to promote to families in the school newsletter too perhaps ?
