"When we finish wending our way through one of these sites, we should feel as if we've gotten to know that author or illustrator a bit as a person. I love a website with personality and passion. As with a good book, a good website should Surprise, it should Startle, and it should Satisfy (AKA The 3 Freeman S's)."
Kia ora - this blog was a place to learn how to blog and to share information relevant to school libraries, literacy and learning and support the Northland school library network meetings. It has not been added to for many years. "Zest" is to aspire to a spirit of liveliness, enthusiasm and relish - and a nod to my citrus setting in the orchard town of Kerikeri where I am based.

Read Kiddo Read, Fuse #8 and Judy Freeman
I've mentioned this great site before (and there is a link to it directly on the Links side bar of this blog) http://www.readkiddoread.com/home
Read Kiddo Read was established by author James Patterson to help people find the right books to keep kids reading “There needs to be a place where parents can find books that work.”
If you need convincing to check it out, read this interview http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/blog/1790000379/post/1850053785.html with Elizabeth Bird from Fuse #8 blog (you can tell I'm a fan !) and Judy Freeman, a key contributor to Read Kiddo Read. I found it an inspiring interview, with two passionate advocates of children's literature and reading.

Reading promotion
I've mentioned the Read Kiddo Read website before and I've put a link on the right hand side of this blog... It has lots of great book recommendations and advice on getting children reading. I've signed up for their monthly e-newsletter - http://tiny.cc/Readkiddoreadnewsletter
I've also mentioned Judy Freeman, a friend of Roxie Munro - here she is writing on the Read Kiddo Read site with 12 TRIED AND TRUE WAYS TO GET YOUR KIDDOS READING - good suggestions - maybe useful for sharing with teachers and parents ? It can be downloaded as a pdf for printing...

Judy Freeman and reading aloud
I explored the website of Roxie Munro http://www.roxiemunro.com/ whose book Mazeways A-Z (Sterling, 2007) is one of my 2 year old nephew's absolute favourites - detailed maze pictures for each letter of the alphabet with different settings - A = Airport, B = Boats, C = Circus, each with hundreds of details to discover... I really recommend it - is available to purchase in NZ and is in the National Library CIS collection for schools. Her website has lots of information, including a step by step guide for children to creating their own mazes...
Roxie's website offers a free signed bookplate, so I wrote away and we now have a friendly correspondence. Roxie mentioned a good friend of hers - Judy Freeman, so I looked her up too and found she is someone I have come across in other capacities - she wrote the wonderful teacher guide to another of my favourite books by Kate Di Camillo The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane available here http://www.edwardtulane.com/
Judy also writes content for James Patterson's website ReadKiddoRead which has a fabulous selection of recommendations and advice... http://readkiddoread.com/home
And I came across this great article Judy wrote for School Library Journal - Books kids will sit still for : 10 ways to recognise a great readaloud - at this link.
